This is a typical amature page: Professionals just get the stuff they need (as long as they get a good return on investment), while we hobbyists just keep dreaming of stuff that we can’t afford and often don’t really need. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing to dream. It can be fun to think of what you could get and do if money was no issue. For me, reading reviews of new gear and dreaming of getting it is all part of the fun.
So here some things I dream of:
Nikon D800 (or whatever the name of the replacement of the D700 is going to be)
One of the main reasons for wanting to step up to a full frame (FX) sensor DSLR is the increased low light performance a larger sensor typically offers. The ability to shoot in 2 or 3 stops lower light compared to a the smaller sensor of a DX DSLR is huge (to me anyway).
AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED Since my current standard zoom is a DX lens, I would first get this (FX) standard zoom to go with my new D800 body.
AF-S NIKKOR 16-35mm f/4G ED VR I would love to have such an ultra wide angle lens, although I might actually prefer a small 16mm prime, since I would probably use the zoom mostly at the widest end anyway. Unfortunately Nikon hasn’t updated its ultra wide primes for a while now and some of the current (old) models are getting mixed reviews.
AF-S NIKKOR 400mm f/2.8G ED At about $9000.- not a lens I’m likely to be able to afford and justify buying anytime soon… But one can always dream.
Wimberley Gimbal head The new 400mm would need some good support for tracking wildlife of all sorts, so I would need a nice gimbal type head as well. The one from Really Right Stuff also looks really nice, with some more options, but also with more bulk and a much heftier price tag.
Adobe Photoshop CS5 Where I can only do RAW adjustments plus some basic spot healing, cloning etc. in Adobe Lightroom 3, with programs like these it’s only your imagination that limits your creative edits. Quite often I wish I had it, but not at that price level for now. Note: You can no longer purchase it as such, as Adobe moved some of their products to a subscription plan.
